Textile Art - Communal Landscape x Renée Rossouw
This woolen wonder is the first of our textile art series. It is a project close to our hearts. The artwork is an adaptation of Renée Rossouw’s original wooden sculpture titled ‘Communal Landscape’ which intrigued Zydia’s curiosity during a visit to Renée’s sunny art studio in Cape Town.
Renée explained that she created the wooden sculpture from wood off-cuts during lock-down time. The artist made it her mission to purposefully use materials on hand to create something beautiful from ‘nothing’. The concept of the artwork exists as a ‘failed’ self-portrait, depicting shapes of a woman’s body.
The architectural artwork with its 3D reliefs sparked Zydia’s interest and she envisioned it as a majestic textile piece whilst staying true to Renée’s initial intention of creating it by hand using environmentally friendly fibers.
South African artist and architect, Renée Rossouw, has collaborated with Something Good Studio on various projects – the one as fun and experimental as the other. Collectively, they decided to reinvent the artwork using hand-dyed wool to match the original artwork. They chose a majestic size to capture a ‘wow-moment’ which is certainly true when observed IRL.
The soft sculpture lives beautifully installed on a wall. It is tufted in a robust manner with mesh backing which could also be used as a functional artwork in the form of a rug on the floor.
This project was commissioned by Johannesburg based art gallery, Candice Berman Gallery. The first of the highly limited edition series of 3 is available to view and purchase at the gallery, see here for more details.
