Welcome to Something Good Studio - the new joint home of Romaria Knitwear and Something Good Homeware

Something Good Studio is a collaborative textile design studio based in Johannesburg. We're proud to be home to two beloved sister-brands – Something Good Homeware and Romaria Knitwear. We represent a harmonious tapestry of culture, art and style. In community, we use art and design to make a positive impact through our philosophy of ‘weaving forward together’.

Our textile pieces are made slowly and well on a small scale in South Africa, and consist of natural fibres and remarkable stitch games. We don't chase seasons or trends. We celebrate timeless quality to be enjoyed throughout all seasons.

We work with artists and designers who connect with our ethos. We strongly connect with South African talent, as well as a European sensibility of valuing perennial beauty and quality. Our collaborative spirit has evolved through a connection between co-owners Zydia Botes (South Africa) and Carla Pinto (Portugal). Read about our intertwined fates below.

2018

Established SOMETHING GOOD STUDIO

Something Good Studio was established by Zydia Botes in Johannesburg in 2018 as a collaborative textile design studio. From the outset, the studio conceptualised and brought to life stand-out textile pieces in collaboration with artists and designers whose work primarily portrays a visual language of playfulness. The studio was established on the basis that textile remains a central and unspoken part of our way of life. In its complexity, varied texture, and multifaceted beauty it is a remarkable medium with which to retell stories that can be lived with to ultimately encourage well-being, happiness and purpose.

2018

The start of a partnership

Fashion Designer Carla Pinto met Zydia at the 100% Design show in 2018. Carla had a lifelong dream of starting a luxurious yet versatile knitwear brand distinguished by graphic patterns and timeless aesthetics. Something Good Studio’s cotton knitted artist designed blankets piqued Carla’s curiosity.

Thereafter, a collaboration formed as they introduced their first knitwear capsule collection. The response received exceeded expectations.

2019

The birth of Romaria Knitwear

As the design duo’s first knitwear collection gained popularity, Zydia and Carla’s relationship evolved. A collaboration turned into a business partnership and their new label named ‘Romaria Knitwear’ came to life. The name ‘Romaria’ derives from Carla’s Portuguese roots, which translates to ‘pilgrimage’ or ‘moving forward together’ – fitting for a brand that believes in interconnectedness and the principle of ‘weaving’ together towards a better designed future.

2020-2021

Carla’s expertise in the South African fashion industry opened doors to Romaria Knitwear’s first solo SA Fashion Week runway show. As the design duo refined their collection, core values formed and Romaria’s ethos became clear.

From the outset, Romaria was conceptualised as a fashion and lifestyle collective where luxury walks hand-in-hand with comfort. The brand was established with the core value of enduring beauty and quality – hence our mantra of not chasing seasons or trends. With every new piece or collection, we design easy to wear knitwear pieces that connect to the next, intended to be complementary and to treat you right throughout all seasons.

2022-2024

TWO BRANDS INTERTWINE TO WEAVE FORWARD TOGETHER

Carla ultimately relocated permanently back to Portugal, while Zydia remained in South Africa. We embarked on a cross-continental partnership, maintaining our local influence while expanding our worldwide reach. We initiated a series of yearly reunions, which are important moments to reconnect in person and celebrate our creations. You can follow some of these adventures in our journal section.

In 2024, we realised that Romaria Knitwear and Something Good Homeware were not only two interconnected brands, but had the potential to be stronger together under one umbrella – Something Good Studio. We officially merged the two sister brands – which can now be found online here in place – and have never looked back.

In addition, our exciting online merger coincided with the next chapter of our story together – the opening of our first physical store in Cape Town’s vibrant and celebrated Watershed at the V&A Waterfront.
